Penguin Protectors Warrnambool - Educational Experience

The Middle Island Project’s educational experience, Penguin Protectors Warrnambool, is a fun and engaging education experience with the opportunity to take a photo with one of our Maremma dogs! During this experience, you will learn about Little Penguins and the importance of protecting them. You will also learn about how our world-first conservation project uses Maremma guardian dogs to look after the colony of Little Penguins on Middle Island, Warrnambool. All funds raised from these experiences go directly towards the care of the Middle Island Project Maremma dogs and conservation of the Little Penguins.

Penguin Protectors Warrnambool is open for public bookings during the Summer and Easter Holidays.

Dates and times will be uploaded onto the above site when bookings are available.

About the experience

The group will meet at the south side of the Foreshore Pavilion Café Kiosk (50 Viaduct Road, Warrnambool) located at the Breakwater. The experience involves a short walk (~600m) mid-way through the experience to the beach at Stingray Bay. This is where the experience will conclude and you will have the opportunity to take a photo with one of the Maremma dogs.

As this is an outdoor experience, you should wear comfortable shoes suitable for uneven ground as you will be walking onto the beach. You will be provided with a high-vis vest that you will need to wear for the duration of the experience. Don’t forget a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses and suitable clothing to protect yourself from the elements!

Please note; there is no seating available on the beach so make sure your footwear is appropriate and comfortable.

You will need to follow the instruction of Middle Island Project Staff (Leader and Dog Handler) for the duration of the experience, particularly when it is your group’s turn to take a photo with a Maremma.

Group Bookings

The Middle Island Project welcomes group bookings by schools, tour groups and other organisations year-round. Bookings are available for the Penguin Protectors Warrnambool experience held at Stingray Bay and for in-house presentations (travel costs may apply).

To enquire about bookings please email:  green@warrnambool.vic.gov.au

We will endeavour to respond to your query within 7 days.

Important Information

To ensure the safety and wellbeing of the Maremma dogs, participants will be unable to pat/make contact with the dogs. Participants need to remain calm and quiet around the dogs including while having a photo. Participants must listen to and follow instructions given by Middle Island Project staff, who reserve the right to remove the dog if necessary for their safety and wellbeing.

The experience DOES NOT go to Middle Island. We are trying to protect the fragile Little Penguin colony and therefore need to keep people off the island so that the seabirds are not disturbed.

Cancellation and Weather Policy

In the event of extreme weather the experience may be relocated or cancelled at the discretion of Middle Island Project Staff. In this case participants will be notified by mobile phone within the hour of the designated start time.

All bookings will be refunded in the event of cancellation by the Middle Island Project. In the event of a relocation, the experience may be held indoors at Flagstaff Hill- the location will be confirmed by mobile phone on the day.

If you need to cancel a booking, please contact us as soon as possible. No refunds will be provided with less than 48 hours’ notice of participants withdrawing from the experience.
